You’ve heard it before from daycares, schools and summer camps whether it was for your child or a friend/family member’s child…”Label Everything!” Why? Because children lose stuff.
How to help my child not lose stuff?
Up until this year I hadn’t thought about having to label/declare what was my little ladybugs because it just wasn’t necessary. This was the first year my daughter attended summer camp and she is officially in preschool this September.
Now my mind wonders how best to make it more possible that those items such as: the beautiful reusable snack bags, the lunch box, the fun utensils, cute ice packs and our reusable containers along with the always disappearing lids and make it back home each time she goes to preschool.
For the older children higher in their educational career the uses for these stickers are endless: dance shoes, sports shoes, uniforms, hats, backpacks, lockers, pencil cases, binders, books, makeup bags, collection containers, phones, wireless cards, laptops, instrument cases and everything else a teen needs.
Sharing Child Custody, But Not Clothes!

Are you sharing custody, tired of not getting the outfit you sent your child out the door returned, but you know it’s no fault of any one’s because everyone is doing their best to remember which items go to which house in an already confusing time. With the starter pack, you have enough stickers to label your child’s entire wardrobe including all the essential items for school and camp. I ask for belongings someone close has given my daughter like her Aunt Michele, Uncle Harry or Grammy to come back with her the next day. There are many times my daughter requests to take things to her fathers and I don’t stand in her way. I let her know, these are your things, you have two homes and you can decide where you would like them. You can enjoy them here at moms, take them to dads or even bring them back and forth. It’s your choice. We try our best giving the outfits back because without that process we usually leave one of her two homes with a shortage of clothes…lol.
When it was time for camp this summer we used Lovable Labels and every labeled weathered the pool, sun, dishwasher, microwave, washer machine friendly all while maintaining there original adorable look, which I might add saved them from being peeled off by my preschooler. There were several reasons I wanted to personalize her belongings headed into camp and/or preschool with her for several reasons.
- Cost- I use a lot of green, reusable containers and bags that we all know can cost you a small fortune, yet can’t keep a sandwich from going stale beyond a few hours. I knew I needed a way to remind my daughter to not throw these away as well as identify to any teachers/aides/volunteers that this was an item to come home with her as opposed to be thrown in the trash. Her towels, bathing suits, water shoes all cost money and I didn’t want to have to replace them. Being a former teacher myself I realize how busy staff are and I would much rather them focus on my child and her education than on whose container is whose.
- Vested Interest – It’s my belief that when I allowed my daughter to pick out (with my slight nudging toward) the oh so lovely polka dot pattern, that she has claimed ownership of the stickers and the item under her assault as she tries to sticker everything in the house. I believe her words were, “I put my name on your wallet mommy, so now it’s mine”. Ahh my dear, that’s not how it works and as a matter of fact, stop wasting the stickers and stop putting stickers on things that aren’t yours. My wallet is very important to our financial success and is off limits unless we need it. It’s not a toy and before it’s touched, we think about it very carefully. This conversation happened right after we were invited to the reveal of the new exhibit, Financial Literacy at The Please Touch Museum, Philadelphia PA on Financial Literacy. This programs begins to teach children about need vs wants and how to start saving up money for important items in their life, so I made references back to the play we watched and the puppet Penny. The play worked because my daughter knew what I was talking about. Small disclosure, I did talk often of the play and concepts throughout the days after the show, the play and program are a launching point to further develop your child’s understanding of money, saving, needs, wants, impulses, responsibilities. You can read more on all the great programs, The Please Touch Museum.
- Character- It makes it easier for my child to have more success at responsibility when she can easily identify which items are hers giving her a sense of accomplishment thus increasing her self esteem and building confidence in herself. She even tells me when she thinks she needs a label. If she is taking a favorite toy to someones house, she’s asked for a label before. She wants to share her items, but she wants them back too, smart girl! These labels are helping her problem solve.
Tried & Tested by Mama Herself for Several Weeks!
I’ve been testing these labels since summer and I can confidently tell you they hold up AMAZINGLY! Labels that can go through the wash and dishwasher like I’ve never seen before as well as stand up to the fading effects of the sun and still look great is a long shot, but Lovable Labels has come through with a product I will stand behind! While my child wore sneakers without socks the shoe labels moved to accommodate her weight and heel. Once in that spot, they stayed put. I originally thought they wouldn’t last, but was surprised to see it was just her the way she applied pressure as she ran around. The label is still flat in there and readable, just not perfectly aligned as I originally placed it. After all the testing I’ve done, that’s the ONLY issue that’s really non issue I could find.
Medical Wristband & Vital ID Wristband

Ordering my little lady a Vital ID Wristband brings me peace of mind knowing trips to amusement parks such as Sesame Place and Disney World are in our future. I hope we never have a need for the Medical Wristband. As many of you know I suffer from many health challenges. Although we want our little ones to be just like us, this is one part of Mom I hope that she does not inherit from me. However, I know there are many of you moms our there that could really use a product like this right now and it will bring you much peace of mind knowing your child is wearing it. Both types of bands (Vital ID & Medical Wristband appear to be the same band, just serving different needs. What’s great about them is if your contact information changes or your child’s condition changes is, the actual cloth band stays in tact while you slip out the paper to update. I requested to review a pink band for my little lady, again asking for her input so she could feel some ownership along with the desire to wear the band proudly.
My description of the bands: It’s a soft band, with soft velcro securing the ends of the band to adjust to fit to your child’s wrist. Everything I review I like to mention how it works on days my disabilities are flaring up. Can I operate/use/work the item on my worst of days when my hands are refusing to open. For a product such as this, most likely I wouldn’t be using it on such a day, because I would be housebound anyway, not carting off to an amusement park…lol. The wristband is easily workable and removable. I believe the Vital ID band is a very logical solution for an emergency situation such as if your child should ever get separated from you and land in the hand of someone willing to help. As with all measures we take to keep our children safe and secure, teaching your child how to use the bracelet is the most important part of wearing the bracelet. Let the bracelet be his/her backup in a stressful situation when they may struggle trying to remember a cell phone number they normally have no issues in remembering.
I like to think about it like this….whatever I think my daughter can do, she does. When I act like she was supposed to be able to remember my cell phone number, she did. I left out words like try, just was matter of fact. OK, what’s my cell number. You need to remember 555-555-5555. Of course it took more times than that. Also letting her hear conversations when I’ve given my cell number and our address to others has helped. I work it in throughout her day into different activities we are doing and even after she got it, we still practice, b/c what you don’t use, you mostly lose.

Back to School time means germ exposure!
It’s back to school time, which means kids will be exposed to lots of germs. A recent conversation I had with a few mothers and some former teachers centered around how to keep kids hands clean while at school and the lack of funding schools have to provide teachers with antibacterial gel or wipes and basic cleaner for the classroom desks. The one mom and former teacher explained how she actually had to purchase her own surface cleaner to clean her classroom desks once a day herself, since the maintenance staff was so limited and the school’s budget did not include cleaning supplies (or even tissues!) for the classes. Thankfully she was able to clean her classroom daily, but it made me wonder about just how clean schools, and kids, are especially with cold and flu season almost here.
Wet Ones® Antibacterial Wipes conducted a survey of parents and found that about 49% are concerned about their kids getting sick and 32% are concerned about their kids being exposed to germs. These results seem to be similar to my personal conversations with parents about this subject of keeping kids healthy and clean. Personally, I prefer that my child wash his hands with soap and water, but that isn’t always possible, especially while traveling or out on the playground. I keep a canister of Wet Ones®Antibacterial Wipes in my car, along with a packet of them in my purse, for those situations when we just can’t get to a sink to wash up. They are especially great for when my son has a snack in the car on a road trip or when we have an impromptu picnic at the playground. While we also have hand sanitizer gel on hand, I prefer to use wipes for my son because they are good at wiping off the grime he seems to attract. While they do contain alcohol, they don’t seem to sting the way some other antibacterial wipes I’ve had. which may be due to the aloe added to their formula. My son and I both also love how the citrus scent smells. I really can’t stand to wear fragrances, as I have terrible allergies, so I’m really picky about the scents of products we use. The two scents, Fresh and Citrus, that Wet Ones Antibacterial Wipes are available in both smell great and do not bother me.
Wet Ones® Antibacterial Wipes has teamed up with science educator Bill Nye to teach families about ways to avoid germs in a fun and interactive way. Check out the Wet Ones Healthy Hands Zone to watch science experiments that you can recreate at home with your kids to learn more about germs. I also found a page on the Wet Ones website written by Dr. Sears and lists 99 tips for back to school success. I appreciate the advice written by Dr. Sears when my son was a baby and I found a number of great tips on this list, including some great tips about healthy breakfast ideas to start the day and other food tips for picky eaters.

My family and I recently had the chance to visit the Garden State Discovery Museum using half priced admission tickets I purchased on Groupon (a fantastic deal site…definitely check it out!) What a great adventure we had visiting this fun kids’ museum! The Garden State Discovery Museum is a kids hands-on museum filled with many, many displays that can be explored, manipulated, jumped upon, or discovered with the senses.
There are 20 different exhibits to explore in the museum, designed in a maze like loop so that favorites can easily be re-visited. We did each display at least twice, some even more, it was that much fun. There was a miniature diner complete with play food, dishes, aprons. This was a huge hit with kids, who happily served the grown-ups at the counter or in the booths their meals of plastic, yet authentic looking food. A bubble area gave kids the opportunity to blow giant bubbles, or even get inside a bubble. There was a pulley-system that created a bubble around the person standing in the middle of a hula hoop dipped in bubble solution. It was fun seeing how long of a bubble kids could make around them before it would pop.
Kids can pretend to be a Flyer and play a game of hockey!

There was a sports section that had a small hockey rink so that kids (and enthusiastic adults) could play some hockey and pretend to be little Flyers. They also had a mini-golf course and basketball court. Next to that was a rock wall where little climbers excelled!
 Pretend Action News camera man!
My son really enjoyed playing camera man and newscaster at the Action News studio. From working the camera to sitting behind the anchor desk, this was one exhibit that was a favorite. The cool thing was that the camera really worked, so kids could see themselves on a TV monitor.
One of my favorite activities was the GIANT Light Bright that kids could play with to make fun patterns and pictures. It was one of my favorite toys as a kid, so a Giant one is really fun!
This interactive museum really gave kids a safe place to play and explore, all while learning. I spoke briefly with a nanny who was there with her charge. She said she brings him weekly, as the family she works for has a membership, and they really enjoy going. This is a great place to have a family membership to if you live nearby.
There is a small snack area where lunches could be purchased (pizza, hot dogs) or one could bring in a lunch to eat there on tables and chairs furnished by Ikea. Nearby was also a gift shop with toys and books.
Admission for ages 12 months and older (including adults) is $10.95. Under one year is free. Seniors are $9.95. During the summer the museum is open later, until 8:30, and admission after 5pm is $5! The Garden State Discovery Museum is located on 2040 Springdale Road in Cherry Hill, NJ. It definitely was a hit with our kiddo!!
Be sure to check out the butterfly garden outside the museum for added fun!

A kids craft that is fun and frugal!
Recently I was reading through a variety of blogs about ways to entertain preschoolers and little kids, looking for inspiration for craft ideas for my son. I discovered ice painting on someone’s blog (which I promptly forgot to bookmark!) and thought it looked like fun. It’s also a basically free craft, as the supplies were already on hand. With the crazy hot weather we have been having, this was a perfect activity for my preschooler, at least for about ten minutes! Do the set up of the project the night before at least so the ice has time to freeze. I keep extra cubes in my freezer for spontaneous crafting as needed!
I used star shaped ice cube molds that I have, although any shape would work. Ikea sells some fun shapes if you are looking for novelty ice cubes. After filling the ice tray with water, I added a few drops of food coloring, the neon variety, to each cube. (Big mistake, only one drop was needed!) I swirled each cube a bit with a toothpick to get the color to distribute evenly, then stuck them in the freezer.
I gave half of them to the little crafter in a plastic container, along with some sheets of white paper and a washcloth. We did this craft outside, as it is messy and will stain! (Have your kids wear a smock or old clothing, or even a bathing suit!)
He loved painting with the cubes, that instantly melted as he rubbed them on the paper. Once dry, it created a watercolor effect. This was a fun and quick activity. Besides dyed fingers, he created some nice pictures that could be used as wrapping paper.

Thinking about your next family vacation?
I’ll have the family time entree with the side of already known for night life please!
Like date nights, but don’t want to sacrifice family fun? All kidding aside….its tough trying to build a vacation.
Best Vacation Tip I Ever Received
It doesn’t have to be perfect, to be great. So often we set out on planning the BEST vacation that our budget can buy. We spend countless hours reading blogs looking for the one destination that will give us everything we are looking for in a vacation. Finding vacation was a little easier for me prior to having a child. If there was great nightlife, yummy restaurants, relaxing beaches, a day spa and a beautiful pool all for under $1000 and 4 hours fly time, it was perfect for me! I wasn’t interested in sight seeing, activities that made me walk, or events that made me think. I vacationed because I needed to relax. Now I have a child and I vacation for reasons that are very different than relaxing, I’m not sure I really relax at all while I’m on vacation. I’m sure the majority of you Moms & Dads will agree with me on that.
Top 10 Reasons Why We Family Vacation
- Expose my child, myself and my family to new experiences – others behave and live differently than we do and its nice to see that IRL (in real life)
- Quality fun time alone with my daughter – when it’s just her & I, there is no one to distract either one of us
- Family bonding time – it’s hard to not make a family relationship stronger while away for 24 hours in a day, several days in a row
- Get away from the normal daily grind of our lives – just stopping doing something for a few days, takes you away long enough to make a change
- Appreciate successes in our lives – rewarding ourselves with a little trip in celebration makes the success feel sealed and delivered for me
- Sponsors send me away to review their destination, event or activity – it’s a little easier to stop your life, rearrange a schedule when someone else is paying
- Relieve stress – it’s hard to be worried on vacation
- Get me away from technology – some how being charged $2 per minute or 50 cents per text message will make a person power down the cell phone
- Give myself a break from chores – dishes and laundry can’t be done if I’m not there to do them
- Save mileage on my car – It’s a short drive, save mileage on my car. Take that lease!

- IMAX Theatre at Tropicana
The theater is located in the quarter on the 2nd floor. It was tricky to get to, so just really plan ahead, heck even call ahead to get walking directions and a good spot to park, so you’re not running all over the Tropicana and then the Quarter looking for the place. In my opinion, it wasn’t clearly marked when we did find it, but again I was rushing from trying to find parking and find the IMAX itself because we parked no where near where we should have. We saw the Coral Reef Adventure and this was my first IMAX experience. Wow! It was amazing! I learned a ton of new information and the movie was breath taking on the IMAX screen. When the movie was over, we were in a rush trying to make it to our next event, valet messed up getting our car to us and we were late, thinking valet was our best bet turned out to be not the best choice. We should have done a little more home work and parked as close as possible to the IMAX theater in the Tropicana. Also, just give yourself a little more time in between activities, so you don’t feel like your rushing all day.
With several touch tanks throughout this aquarium, you and your children get an up close view and feel of many featured fish and animals, such as: sharks, juvenile rays, cow nose rays, and bat rays, horseshoe crabs, living fossils, and invertebrates. Be sure to time your visits around the Live Diver Feeding Show, The Exotic Animal Show and Story Time. For the tiny tots, you’ll want to stop by the Coloring Station, Sea Shell Sand Box and Mariner’s Maze. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children and FREE for children 3 and under. FREE parking. While we were there, this fish took a liking to Al, the sweet man in my life.

Atlantic City Bayside Attractions
After all AC is an island, so there is a bay well known for it’s no no need for a fishing license attitude along the jetties on Maine Avenue and the Boardwalk and also in the inlet off of the Boardwalk. However, if you prefer to fish off a boat on the water, there are many fishing and cruising charters at several city locations.
While visiting Atlantic City, consider checking out the Beach Bars, Boardwalk activities, bay festivities and year round events as well as the beach and the Boardwalk because, from the beach to the bay, Atlantic City is “Always Turned On.”

Regal summer movies for a buck, all summer long!
Summer vacations are about to begin in the Bucks/Montco/Philadelphia region for children and their families. Parents and caregivers are always on the quest for inexpensive and family-friendly entertainment for young children to occupy those hot summer months. The Regal Entertainment Group, which includes 284 Regal Cinemas, United Artists, and Edwards Theatres across the country are offering a solution for inexpensive family entertainment all summer long: kid-friendly movies for a dollar! This is a great way to stay inside a cool theater on a hot morning and provide your charges with a couple of hours of giggles and fun.
The Summer Movie Express will offer selected G and PG rated family movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:00 am for nine weeks, starting on Tuesday June 21st and running through Wednesday August 17th. Each theater will have their own schedule of which movies they are showing each week, so if one lives close to several theaters, the selection of movies each week will increase. In the Philadelphia region there are several theaters participating including in Bucks County The Oxford Valley Theatre Stadium 14 in Langhorne, The Warrington Crossing Stadium 22 in Warrington, and in New Jersey, the Burlington Stadium 22 in Burlington. For a full listing of participating theaters, see the Regal Summer Movies website.
Admission is only a dollar per person and a portion of that will be donated by the theaters to the Will Rogers Institute, who uses the money to fund their mission in the areas of medical research and health education. Regal has committed to donate a million dollars to the Will Rogers Institute from the proceeds of the summer movie series.
Some of the movies included in the Summer Express Movie series are Ramona & Beezus, Open Season (1, 2, and 3,) Megamind, Yogi Bear, Charlotte’s Web, Jason and the Argonauts, How to Train Your Dragon, Muppets Take Manhattan, Muppetts from Space, and Karate Kid. See the Summer Movie Express website for the movie schedule of your local theater.
These are not first-run movies, however, for younger children who may have not yet seen these movies in a theater, it makes it an exciting and different experience than sitting at home and watching on the television. It also is a great way to cool off when its too hot to play in the sun all day! Be sure to get there early, as it’s possible that the theaters will be crowded. Plan your schedule by checking out the full listing of kids movies this summer and making sure to see your kids’ favorites! See Mama’s calendar for some of the theaters schedules.
This is a fun opportunity for kids of a variety of ages, so you can bring all of your kids or grandkids for a morning of fun kids movies this summer. Snacks optional!

A life-size elephant holds a log of conga drums for kids to bang out tunes
Summer brings the newest exhibit to the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia!
The new exhibit for the summer at the Please Touch Museum is open for fun! The Rainforest Rhythm exhibit has returned, complete with a life-sized elephant and lots of musical opportunities for kids to explore.
Rainforest Rhythm provides a unique play-based learning experience that encourages the inclusion of music into everyday life,” said PTM President & CEO Laura Foster. “Making music is an important part of childhood, as it promotes creativity, imagination and self-expression.
The life-sized elephant holds a conga drum log for kids to beat out a rhythm of their own. There are melodic frogs, a natural log organ and xylophones to make some tunes, and a giant tree filled with an assortment of sounds controlled by kids pulling different strings. There are rain stick logs that turn to create lovely sounds. And be on the lookout for chattering monkeys and a nine-foot long stuffed forest snake! Kids are able to interact and play with many nature-inspired musical instruments that encourage learning through play.
Nature-inspired instruments in the Rainforest Rhythm exhibit
The Rainforest Rhythm exhibit is adjacent to the Carousel room. To enhance the experience, the lighting is muted and visitors hear gentle rainforest sounds, such as a waterfall. At one end of the exhibit is a play area called the “Storybook Cottage,” that is toddler friendly. The Three Little Bears tale can be played out by little ones, complete with taking a “nap” in three different sized beds. It is just one of many learning activities for kids found throughout this exhibit and the entire museum.
Little ones can play in the Storybook Cottage, adjacent to the Rainforest Rhythm exhibit at the Please Touch Museum
My son had a blast trying out all of the instruments in the Rainforest Rhythm exhibit. His favorites included the foot-pedal organ and the xylophones. He also enjoyed meeting a monkey, which was a puppet controlled by one of the museum’s staff puppeteers. The Please Touch Museum is a great place to go for things to do for kids anytime of the year, but especially during the summer when kids are home and it’s really hot outside. We find that visiting in the afternoon is a great time, as the museum is less crowded after lunch. We are members of the museum, as my son loves it so much we go at least once a month! When we went the first time to the museum, about two years ago, the Rainforest Rhythm exhibit was also on display then. My son loved playing with the musical frogs and climbing into the canoe back then. He was so small, he couldn’t even reach some of the drums. It was fun to see him play on this exhibit again, now that he is taller and could see things differently. It was just as enjoyable for him this time as it was two years ago. I was also impressed with how well-maintained the museum is kept, considering how many children visit daily. Despite this being a return exhibit, it was in pristine condition.
Entry to the Rainforest Rhythm exhibit is included with admission to the museum and will be on display all summer until September 6, 2011. Regular museum hours are Monday through Saturday from 9:00am until 5:00pm, and Sundays from 11:00am – 5:00pm. The Please Touch Museum, the Children’s Museum of Philadelphia, is located at Memorial Hall Fairmount Park, 4231 Avenue of the Republic, Philadelphia, PA. For more information, call 215-581-3181, or visit www.pleasetouchmuseum.org.
