Earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes…how did you survive?
So now that Hurricane Irene is in the history books, how did you make out during and after it? Thankfully, it was not quite as severe as anticipated, yet it still caused a lot of damage. In one week we experienced an earthquake, a hurricane and tornado warnings. It was a bit much for this Mama! For this week’s question of the week, how did you and your family handle the hurricane?
To prepare in our house, I made sure that we had some working flashlights, lots of ice packs and baggies filled with frozen water to keep the freezer cold, and peanut butter! My son insisted we buy more peanut butter at BJs, where we went to find D sized batteries, but were unsuccessful. Our basement tends to flood, so I moved some stuff around so that it would be safe, just in case. We had been planning to leave for a vacation at the beach, but since the hurricane threat caused the evacuation of the New Jersey beaches, we stayed home and waited for the rain. The first tornado warning for our area definitely was scary for me, which is when I scooped my son out of bed to hide in our basement, which had started to flood. He was a trooper, and was too sleepy to even question why we were in the basement! After the tornado warning was cancelled and my son was back in bed sleeping, my husband and I spent the next few hours using the wet vac and our portable sump pump to get rid of the water. By the morning, it was just wet, not standing water. We were exhausted, but relieved the rain didn’t cause more damage.
Now that the hurricane is past, I feel very lucky that it wasn’t quite as bad as expected. I had been in Florida for hurricanes Andrew and Francis and saw how destructive they were. I hope that your home is okay! Please share how you survived the crazy weather and how you explained it to your kids!
This weekend’s weather forecast is sounding more ominous every minute! The threat of hurricane Irene, due to arrive to the Philadelphia, Bucks County, Montgomery County and New Jersey regions Sunday morning, means lots of cancellations and evacuations. While everyone hopes that this storm is being hyped more serious than it really will be, it is so important to be safer than sorry. I can’t help but think of those tragic news stories that followed hurricane Katrina, when people were not as prepared as they could have been. There are many resources online that provide helpful information on how to prepare for a storm. Here are a few resources for Mama’s Little Helper readers:
Be prepared for during and after Hurricane Irene!
If your area has not been evacuated, there are a few things you can do to help your family shelter at home during and after the storm, when power outages are possible. While this list is not inclusive, here are a few tips I learned about from reading various places online to help deal with this storm:
- Have a good supply of drinking water on hand. Approximately one gallon per person for at least three days, up to seven.
- Set your refrigerators and freezers to the coldest setting in case of a power failure.
- Freeze extra ice packs or even bottles of water to use to help keep your freezer contents cold in case of a power outage.
- Be sure to have a good supply of any prescriptions you need on hand.
- Have some extra cash on hand. If there is a power failure in the area, ATMs will not work.
- Fill your gas tanks of your car and generator if you have one.
- Keep non perishable foods on hand, such as peanut butter and jelly, bread, snack bars, fruit, and your kids’ favorite snacks!
- If there are babies at home, be sure to have diapers, food, milk/formula supplies for them.
- Have flashlights with batteries on hand, as they are safer than candles.
- Keep a box of activities that can be used to entertain your kids during a power outage. Games, crayons and coloring books, and even something new to be a nice surprise for the kids during this stressful time.
- Clear your yard and decks/porches of potential hazards…store lawn furniture, bird feeders, toys indoors if possible.
Natural disasters are scary for adults and confusing for children. It is important to teach your kids about how to be safe without frightening them. It’s good for the adults to have a plan for evacuation from the home if necessary and share as much as that plan as is appropriate for your children based upon their age. Watching the news with kids can provoke anxiety for some kids. Share with your kids just enough information about what is going on with out going in to too much detail to curb anxiety. Some kids won’t care, but there are lots of kids who will be scared. Plan to have a little fun while you are stuck inside during the storm. It might help relieve everyone’s anxiety or stir-craziness!
Be safe during the storm! I hope that everyone who has been evacuated from the Jersey shore is able to return home safely soon.

My family and I recently had the chance to visit the Garden State Discovery Museum using half priced admission tickets I purchased on Groupon (a fantastic deal site…definitely check it out!) What a great adventure we had visiting this fun kids’ museum! The Garden State Discovery Museum is a kids hands-on museum filled with many, many displays that can be explored, manipulated, jumped upon, or discovered with the senses.
There are 20 different exhibits to explore in the museum, designed in a maze like loop so that favorites can easily be re-visited. We did each display at least twice, some even more, it was that much fun. There was a miniature diner complete with play food, dishes, aprons. This was a huge hit with kids, who happily served the grown-ups at the counter or in the booths their meals of plastic, yet authentic looking food. A bubble area gave kids the opportunity to blow giant bubbles, or even get inside a bubble. There was a pulley-system that created a bubble around the person standing in the middle of a hula hoop dipped in bubble solution. It was fun seeing how long of a bubble kids could make around them before it would pop.
Kids can pretend to be a Flyer and play a game of hockey!

There was a sports section that had a small hockey rink so that kids (and enthusiastic adults) could play some hockey and pretend to be little Flyers. They also had a mini-golf course and basketball court. Next to that was a rock wall where little climbers excelled!
 Pretend Action News camera man!
My son really enjoyed playing camera man and newscaster at the Action News studio. From working the camera to sitting behind the anchor desk, this was one exhibit that was a favorite. The cool thing was that the camera really worked, so kids could see themselves on a TV monitor.
One of my favorite activities was the GIANT Light Bright that kids could play with to make fun patterns and pictures. It was one of my favorite toys as a kid, so a Giant one is really fun!
This interactive museum really gave kids a safe place to play and explore, all while learning. I spoke briefly with a nanny who was there with her charge. She said she brings him weekly, as the family she works for has a membership, and they really enjoy going. This is a great place to have a family membership to if you live nearby.
There is a small snack area where lunches could be purchased (pizza, hot dogs) or one could bring in a lunch to eat there on tables and chairs furnished by Ikea. Nearby was also a gift shop with toys and books.
Admission for ages 12 months and older (including adults) is $10.95. Under one year is free. Seniors are $9.95. During the summer the museum is open later, until 8:30, and admission after 5pm is $5! The Garden State Discovery Museum is located on 2040 Springdale Road in Cherry Hill, NJ. It definitely was a hit with our kiddo!!
Be sure to check out the butterfly garden outside the museum for added fun!

Cathy, a mom to 8 and a certified nurse midwife, is one busy mama!
This week’s Featured Mama of the Week is Catherine K. Tanksley MSN, CNM, DNP(c), a busy working mom. She is the mother to five children, Tamica (27)/(Tamica’s fiancé Tim), Tasha(26)/(Tasha’s husband Jon), Tia(20), Kia (14), & Devon (13.) Timothy, her fiancé has three children; Travis(29), Marcus(28), & Candace(26.) She said, “so, we actually have eight children, one son-law and one son-law to be, a grandchild to be (Tim’s daughter Talia (9) and a grandchild on the way (Tasha and Jon are expecting in February!)” What a busy family!
Cathy is a certified nurse midwife in a busy NY hospital and she loves what she does. She mentioned that she is also finishing up her doctorate in nursing practice degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Regarding her work, Cathy said, “It would be the perfect job if babies would come into this world between 9AM-5PM, but that’s not the case. Lucky for me Timothy is able to work from home as an IT consultant and that makes life a whole lot easier when it comes to childcare. Even though our two children at home are older, sometimes that means they need more supervision and the older children including the ones in college also need our attention when they visit. Timothy’s flexible schedule makes a big difference in our children’s lives. Even if my job responsibilities take me away from the children it is comforting to know that one parent can be there.”
As if her work doesn’t keep her busy enough, this coming Fall Cathy and Timothy are opening Beckley Nursing Prep, LLC in Bellmawr, New Jersey. “Beckley will provide tutoring services for LPNs, Paramedics, Respiratory Therapists and other qualified paraprofessionals who are seeking a Registered Nurse degree from Excelsior College. Beckley Nursing Prep, LLC is a unique educational program that will allow you to become an RN in as little as one year and for only a fraction of the cost. Beckley Nursing Prep, LLC utilizes the typical classroom environment which makes all the difference in the world. If you can dedicate just two days or evenings a week/ five hours each day/evening an RN degree can be yours. Just minutes from Philadelphia, Beckley Nursing Prep, LLC is affordable and convenient. The first one hundred students to register receive a free notebook computer! Call (888) 552-1117 for more information.”
Cathy mentioned that one of her parenting challenges is to give everyone the attention they deserve. “There is only one of me and I would love to spend more one on one time with each of my children. So, I do the next best thing and have as many family gatherings as possible….Birthday celebrations, graduation parties, and big holiday diners.” There are many joys in parenting and Cathy mentioned that she enjoys watching her children grow and learn to be responsible adults making wonderful career and life choices. She has taught her children to work hard in school and to always be the best that they can be. ”And, when things don’t go just right always remember that “this too shall pass” and there will be a better tomorrow,” she tells them. She has focused upon teaching her kids responsibility through assigning chores to her kids and by teaching them to be accountable. She also mentioned that the responsibility of owning a pet is a rewarding way to teach children about responsibility.
Cathy’s tip for new parents is that “there are some things that just don’t matter. Remember to cherish the important things in life and don’t get upset about the small things. Don’t strive to be perfect, strive to be happy.” Great advice from a mom who knows! The best advice that Cathy received about parenting came from her mother-law. She said, “It’s ok to let the child get dirty, she’s just having fun.” Wise words, indeed!
If you would like more information about Cathy’s Beckley Nursing Prep, LLC program, please contact her via email, info@beckleynursingprep.com or by phone at (888)552-1117.
Thank you Cathy, for sharing a bit about yourself, your family and your business with Mama’s Little Helper!

Jennifer Auer shares how she became the mom who shares fun things to do in New Jersey!
This week’s Featured Mama of the Week is Jennifer Auer, the owner and blogger behind Jersey Family Fun and Fairytale Entertainment, LLC. Jenn is the mom to three boys, ages 6.5, 5, and 2.5 who love to read, pretend, and eat! They enjoy taking advantage of their local library’s programs, exploring their neighborhood, and being out in nature at parks.
Jenn’s website, Jersey Family Fun, a site dedicated to providing ideas for fun things to do in Jersey, came to be in a rather creative way. She wasn’t always a blogger and shared the following when asked about how she started her sites:
“I’ve always been involved in volunteer work and community service. That followed me after college. I went to Bryant University for Entrepreneurship. I did a short stint after college at Enterprise Rent A Car as a management trainee and learned that wasn’t a life for me. I was not made out to dress up in suits, wash cars, and try to convince people to buy the extra insurance.
From there I went on to do public relations and volunteer management at a variety of nonprofits. When the turnover and politics got to be too much, I turned my passion for working with families into a career in teaching. Then, three wonderful boys came along and the logistics of working out of the home got difficult. Plus, I wanted to be with my children.
In 2009, through a friend of a friend I was presented the option to buy what was then Elizabeth Norton’s party business, Fitness Playhouse. I renamed it Fairytale Entertainment. From there we added superheroes and other children’s characters to our cast of princesses. It’s grown from there. Now we travel throughout Southern New Jersey to children’s birthday parties making make-believe come alive with characters, face-painting, and theme-based parties. It’s been a great opportunity to do work I love while being home with my children.
During this same time, I was also discovering great family-friendly events in our community. I wanted to share that information with others. I struggled for a long time with the best way to do that. I started out blogging for Elizabeth at Professor of Play, but soon after launched my own site, Jersey Family Fun. I love being able to help families in New Jersey and those visiting New Jersey find family-friendly attractions to visit, restaurants to eat, hotels to stay at. It’s very rewarding to discover a secret treasure in New Jersey and then be able to share that with others.”
Jennifer and Karen Hudson Sweitzer recently decided to launch a new site together focusing upon Atlantic City, called Family Friendly AC. Following the same model as Jersey Family Fun, they intend to showcase Atlantic City in the same way in order to help families discover what they can do in Atlantic City.
When asked about her use of social media, Jenn responded, “I use Social Media daily. Both Facebook and Twitter have their advantages and have helped Jersey Family Fun grow. Twitter has allowed me to form partnerships with businesses I never thought I would be talking with. One of our first giveaways for Sesame Place tickets was the result of a Twitter conversation. Everyday new opportunities open for us because of someone we are talking to on Twitter. Facebook has its advantages too, especially with the new changes. It really allows us to talk with our readers. It opens up the door for communication and the fans love it. It’s great to log on and see our fan count keep growing because our readers enjoy what they are seeing and find value in the information we are sharing.”
Since writing and blogging about events in NJ doesn’t keep Jennifer busy enough, she also spends time tutoring and running her party business on the weekends, Fairytale Entertainment. The majority of her work is done at home, but those two jobs take her outside the home as well. While her work is very demanding, she still enjoys it, as it is also flexible and rewarding. Childcare presents some dilemmas, but Jennifer is able to deal with that by working at night and on weekends when her husband is around to care for their children. This doesn’t always work well when she has to deal with businesses that keep traditional 9-5 hours, but she is able to make it work. (But when Does she sleep??)
Parenting presents its own challenges. For Jenn, the hardest part of being a parent is a balance between all the roles she has along with the responsibilities of parenting. While she hasn’t discovered the perfect answer yet, she works on learning from other parents and not sleeping enough so she can get everything done!
Teaching her children about being socially responsible is important to Jenn. She said, “I want my children to be involved in their communities. I want them to value the opportunities they have and I want them to give back, volunteer. When I look for volunteer opportunities now, I look for ones they can be involved with. Ones they can connect to and understand. I think family volunteer opportunities are so important if we are going to help our children develop the right values. They can’t learn from us unless they are involved in it themselves. It’s not enough for them to watch. They must be doing. Our Soles4Souls shoe drive was a big deal for us. When we started I explained how some children don’t have shoes. We talked about how it would be to go a few hours with shoes and could they imagine not having any shoes at all or not being able to go to school because they didn’t have shoes. As we collected shoes from their collection and their friends, they began to see how each person could make a difference and what those little differences could add up to.”
Thank you Jennifer for sharing a bit of your life and work with Mama’s Little Helper’s readers!

Regal summer movies for a buck, all summer long!
Summer vacations are about to begin in the Bucks/Montco/Philadelphia region for children and their families. Parents and caregivers are always on the quest for inexpensive and family-friendly entertainment for young children to occupy those hot summer months. The Regal Entertainment Group, which includes 284 Regal Cinemas, United Artists, and Edwards Theatres across the country are offering a solution for inexpensive family entertainment all summer long: kid-friendly movies for a dollar! This is a great way to stay inside a cool theater on a hot morning and provide your charges with a couple of hours of giggles and fun.
The Summer Movie Express will offer selected G and PG rated family movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:00 am for nine weeks, starting on Tuesday June 21st and running through Wednesday August 17th. Each theater will have their own schedule of which movies they are showing each week, so if one lives close to several theaters, the selection of movies each week will increase. In the Philadelphia region there are several theaters participating including in Bucks County The Oxford Valley Theatre Stadium 14 in Langhorne, The Warrington Crossing Stadium 22 in Warrington, and in New Jersey, the Burlington Stadium 22 in Burlington. For a full listing of participating theaters, see the Regal Summer Movies website.
Admission is only a dollar per person and a portion of that will be donated by the theaters to the Will Rogers Institute, who uses the money to fund their mission in the areas of medical research and health education. Regal has committed to donate a million dollars to the Will Rogers Institute from the proceeds of the summer movie series.
Some of the movies included in the Summer Express Movie series are Ramona & Beezus, Open Season (1, 2, and 3,) Megamind, Yogi Bear, Charlotte’s Web, Jason and the Argonauts, How to Train Your Dragon, Muppets Take Manhattan, Muppetts from Space, and Karate Kid. See the Summer Movie Express website for the movie schedule of your local theater.
These are not first-run movies, however, for younger children who may have not yet seen these movies in a theater, it makes it an exciting and different experience than sitting at home and watching on the television. It also is a great way to cool off when its too hot to play in the sun all day! Be sure to get there early, as it’s possible that the theaters will be crowded. Plan your schedule by checking out the full listing of kids movies this summer and making sure to see your kids’ favorites! See Mama’s calendar for some of the theaters schedules.
This is a fun opportunity for kids of a variety of ages, so you can bring all of your kids or grandkids for a morning of fun kids movies this summer. Snacks optional!
